Shrewsbury Tango is a Argentine Tango social dance club (Salon) held every Thursday at The Lantern, Sundorne, Shrewsbury. 7.00pm - 10.30pm. It is run by volunteers on a non-profit basis, who ensure that events are relaxed and friendly, and involve lots of actual dancing. We also host traditional milongas (social dances) featuring the rich musical Heritage of the Tango Golden Age.
The traditional Tango we practice is an improvised social dance elegantly interpreting the passionate dance music which evolved in Argentina and is now danced all over the world. It is a highly accessible dance and culture with fascinating hybrid forms, that is unbeatable for maintaining good fitness and posture.
Our beginners and improvers courses, held at least twice a year, run by Sharon Koch and Mishca Morris, should be sufficient to start you on your Tango journey.
To assist learning the common language of Salon Tango, rather than show tango, the emphasis is on maintaining an authentic Argentine Tango atmosphere by using only the classic music that is played in Buenos Aires. In that way, you should learn how to feel and dance with the music, which is particularly important in crowded situations with little space. (refer to tango in Buenos Aires link and video examples).
Shrewsbury Tango welcomes a diverse tango scene with nuevo, alternative and show tango styles being available in this area, and hope that the grounding we offer will enable you to dance these better. For those who prefer to focus on simply dancing the traditional Argentine way with like-minded people we will enable you to do that.
We ensure that all teachers at Shrewsbury Tango teach the same Tango fundamentals consistently by using current best practice. Our course teachers Sharon Koch and Mishca Morris regularly attend workshops and have ongoing private lessons and Sharon has completed a teachers course at El Corte in Holland, as well as going to Buenos Aires.
