Shrewsbury Tango is a Argentine Tango social dance club held every Thursday at The Lantern, Sundorne, Shrewsbury from 7pm to 10.30pm. It is run by volunteers on a non-profit basis. We ensure that events are relaxed and friendly and involve lots of dancing for everyone. All our tango evenings feature the rich musical heritage of the period commonly known as the 'Golden Age' of tango. Our Basics Course, held at least twice a year and run by Sharon Koch and her support teachers, will give you an excellent start to your tango journey.

The tango we practise at the club is an improvised social dance. Dancers elegantly interpret the tango dance music which evolved in Argentina and is now danced all over the world. Argentine tango is an accessible dance with fascinating hybrid forms, and it is unbeatable for maintaining good fitness and posture.

Our courses teach the basics that youneed to dance tango socially. You will learn how to feel and dance to  tango music and to follow essential etiquette such as the line of dance — all crucial to learning to dance well socially. The club is very fortunate to have a direct link with Buenos Aires, through Sally (the Shrewsbury-born author of Happy Tango: Sallycat's Guide to Dancing in Buenos Aires).

Shrewsbury Tango is part of a wider and diverse national tango scene, with different flavours of 'nuevo', 'alternative' and 'show tango' styles also available in our region. We believe that the grounding in excellent fundamentals offered by Shrewsbury Tango will enable you to dance any of these other tango styles more proficiently.  For those who prefer to focus on simply dancing the traditional Argentine way with like-minded people, we will enable you to do that.

We ensure that all the tango teaching at Shrewsbury Tango is consistent and follows what we regard as being current best practice in grounding you in basics to suit many styles of Tango. Sharon Koch co-ordinates all our teaching and she regularly attends workshops and has ongoing private lessons. Sharon has completed  teaching courses at El Corte in Holland, as have two other members of our community . With our visiting teachers, there is plentiful extra input adding valuable different perspectives.

Shrewsbury Tango does not currently run its own Milongas but we support the monthly Milongas held at Pant, which is nearer Sharon's other Clubs in Oswestry, Chester and Bangor. This wider community has recently hosted Korey Ireland and then Siobhan Richards for a weeks residency and has its third visit from Eric Jeurisson in October 2012.

If you like the sound of what we offer and would like to dance with us, do e-mail or telephone. We may be able to cater for you outside the course periods.
